The test results have just arrived! Our two females are N/N (negative/negative) and cannot transmit the ARDS disease.

What is ARDS?

ARDS stands for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome. It is a fatal hereditary respiratory disease affecting the Dalmatian breed and is caused by a mutation in the ANLN gene.
The disease only develops in puppies that have inherited the mutated gene from both parents. Almost 100% of affected puppies die between 4 and 10 months of age!
A dalmatian can be tested :

  • P/P (positive/positive). It is a sick puppy.
  • N/P (positive/negative). This is a dog that is in good health but can transmit the disease.
  • N/N (negative/negative). This dog does not transmit the disease. This is the case with my females.

Genetic testing can detect the presence of the mutated allele. In my opinion, it is very simple and essential to have breeding Dalmatians tested in order to eradicate this disease quickly!
